PATRICIA FREIERT was introduced to shibori through a gift from a Japanese friend in 1988. Although professionally a classicist who had spent a career teaching Latin and art and archaeology, a year in Japan opened her eyes to shibori’s wide range of techniques and possibilities and kindled anew a love affair with textiles.

Upon returning to Minnesota she began taking workshops and studying various shibori techniques and dyeing. She began teaching, showing and selling her work in 1996 and has since spent another year in Japan studying with two Japanese instructors.
Her work is noteworthy for the wide variety of techniques that she uses to create patterns and textures, as well as the way in which she exploits the possibilities of various dyes within one piece. This work which has been recognized by a number of awards, has been exhibited in Japan and America in galleries, shops and major craft shows including those of the American Craft Council and Minnesota Crafts Council.
